With 2017 fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to look back on social media developments of the last year and look ahead to see where we, as businesses and individuals, should be focusing our time online. No-one can predict the future but we can certainly make educated guesses based on developments on some platforms.  Here are the areas we would advise focusing on in the coming year to stay on top of the social media game…

  1. Video

You’ll no doubt know that video has grown at an exponential rate over the past two years, filling news-feeds, consuming data and diverting attention from more traditional marketing approaches. According to Facebook, videos consumed on its platform eat up 100 million hours PER DAY! And, a whopping 500 million people watch videos on Facebook each day (statistics from Video really is the present and the future and with this kind of growth, companies can’t afford to ignore it in their 2017 marketing plans.

  1. Facebook and Facebook Live Videos

Don’t neglect Facebook. It may have been around for over a decade but it is still the NUMBER ONE social site for business and pleasure and is continuing to grow at a rapid pace, with no sign of easing up! Recent statistics show 93% of all marketers use Facebook, with a staggering 91% using Facebook Advertising as a marketing tool. However, it’s interesting to note that one of Facebook’s newest features, the Facebook Live video, is not so commonly used – just 26% of marketers fully utilise it. So if you’re not already doing so, jump on this bandwagon and do live videos!

  1. Engagement Platforms

Focusing on engagement across social media sites has increasingly become a staple of social media strategy and is becoming the main goal for many brands. But, it’s not the quantity of posts on social media that counts; it’s the quality and interaction with the audience that really matters. Over the past year platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram and WhatsApp have overtaken Twitter in growth of users and engagement-reach, showing that a personal, engaged approach is becoming increasingly popular.

  1. Virtual/Augmented Reality

With Pokémon Go this year becoming the most viral application of all time – with users spending more time on the app than on Facebook – it is clear many people are keen to buy into this type of virtual reality, integrating it into their everyday lives. We believe 2017 will see a rise in this type of technology with more and more brands jumping on board.
